about

I Had to Go: After John’s move to NYC, he began to receive calls from his first wife, Cynthia. She was calling to find out why he hadn’t had any contact with Julian, their son in such a long while. John ignored most of these calls, suspecting she had ulterior motives for calling and that she wanted him back. This letter is written to make sure she has no such illusions.

lyrics

I Had To Go (Letter To Cynthia)

Long ago, you were my Brigitte Bardot
But nobody should be someone else forever
I had to go, I told you so

We didn’t see it coming in a million years
Sometimes love just disappears and we gotta move on
Yeah, we gotta move on

We had a good time
Was it such a crime?
Nothing I said could change your mind
We had a good time
Such a very good time
Nothing was ever gonna change your mind, oh…

Once you were soft and I was sharp
We can’t pretend we didn’t know how that would end
And I had to go
I told you so

When my world changed, you stayed the same
You saw it yourself in Rishikesh, it was such a mess
It was all such a mess

We had a good time
Til it wasn’t a good time
Nothing could ever change your mind
We had a good time
Such a very good time
But nothing was ever gonna change your mind, oh…
